Cold Plunge at Home vs. Studio Membership: Which Is Cheaper? (2026)

The quick answer: an entry-level home cold plunge pays for itself in about 22 months compared with a typical unlimited studio membership. We checked the published prices of studios in our directory: the median unlimited membership is $199 a month, the median drop-in is $62.50, and a home plunge starts around $3,799. If you'd plunge at least twice a week for two years, buy one. If not, a studio is cheaper, and it comes with a sauna.

Most articles on this topic guess at studio prices. We didn't have to. Contrast Therapy Finder lists sauna and cold plunge studios across the U.S., so we went to their websites and wrote down what they actually charge.

How Much Does a Home Cold Plunge Cost?

A home plunge with a built-in chiller starts in the high $3,000s. As of October 30, 2026, Sun Home lists its Cold Plunge Vertical at $3,799 and its Cold Plunge Horizontal at $3,999. The Horizontal holds 128 gallons, reaches 32°F and also heats to 104°F. Its Pro line, which reaches 28°F, runs $13,999 to $15,199.

Then there's the cost of running it. The Horizontal uses a 1 HP chiller, which is about 746 watts. If it ran six hours a day at $0.18 per kWh, that's about $25 a month. That's our illustration, not a measured figure. Your climate, room temperature and power rate will change it, and you should also budget for delivery, water care and any electrical work.

When Does a Home Cold Plunge Pay for Itself?

Here's the math for the $3,799 plunge, with $25 a month to run it. What matters most is what you'd otherwise pay a studio.

What you'd pay a studioPer monthTime to break even
Two drop-ins a month at the median$12538 months
Lowest unlimited plan we found$9951 months
Median unlimited plan$19922 months
Highest unlimited plan we found$35012 months

So in an expensive market, a plunge can pay off in about a year. In a cheap one, it can take over four years. A $13,999 Pro takes about 80 months against the median, so nobody should buy one purely to save money.

What Does the Math Leave Out?

  • The sauna. Most memberships include heat. A home plunge replaces only the cold half, so if you want contrast therapy, you'll need a sauna too.
  • Convenience. A plunge outside your back door takes minutes. A studio trip can take an hour. Whichever you'll really use is the cheaper one.
  • Other people. A home plunge can be shared by everyone in your house for one price. Studio memberships are usually per person.
  • Upkeep. At a studio, someone else cleans the water. At home, that's you.
  • Community. Plenty of people keep going to a studio for the room, not the tub.

Is a Home Cold Plunge Worth It?

It's worth it if you've already built the habit. Try a studio first: a month or two of memberships costs far less than a plunge you stop using. Then use this rule:

  • Under once a week: pay per visit. The $3,799 plunge equals about 61 drop-ins.
  • One to two visits a week and you love the sauna: get a studio membership.
  • Two or more visits a week, or two or more people at home: a home plunge is likely to win within about two years.

How We Collected These Prices

On October 30, 2026, we checked the public websites of the 164 studios then listed with a working site. 81 showed prices we could read. We kept only plans with a clear regular price for cold plunge or sauna-and-plunge access, and left out intro offers and plans we couldn't confirm. That leaves 10 single-visit prices and 11 unlimited plans, so treat this as a snapshot and not a national average. It leans toward Austin, Denver and New York. Prices exclude tax. We'll update this page as we collect more.
